Touch of Grey by the Grateful Dead

Touch of Grey — This Friday’s Song

This Friday’s song is “Touch of Grey” by the Grateful Dead. While I never considered myself a “Deadhead” growing up, I owned a number of their albums. Several of their songs are still sprinkled throughout my streaming playlists. Not sure if it was feeling more than just a little bit “grey” trying to do yard work in the heat this week or something else that brought this song to mind.

The song “Touch of Grey” was released in 1987 as part of the album In the Dark. While Grateful Dead’s songs can have different meanings, I personally interpret this one as a reflection on aging, resilience, and optimism during tough times. The chorus line, “I will get by / I will survive,” expresses determination and the recognition of life’s obstacles. The song’s lively tempo contrasts with its contemplation of mortality and life’s transience, but it ultimately delivers a positive message: even when life presents challenges, there is always hope and a way forward.

I chose the official video version which features a cool live show. I think this a great song for these summer nights. Hope you enjoy “Touch of Grey” by the Grateful Dead.
