Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce — This Friday’s Song

Bit behind with sharing what we picked out of our music collection this week. This week’s choice is actually a triple play by Jim Croce including Time in a Bottle, Operator, and I’ve Got a Name.

Photographs and Memories by Jim Croce

Jim Croce broke onto the music scene in 1972, my freshman year at C.W. Post College on Long Island. He had signed a record deal that year and appeared on American Bandstand, the Tonight Show, and the Dick Cavett Show. I think I first saw him on the Tonight show.

On September 20, 1973, the day before the lead single to his fifth album, I Got a Name, was released, Jim Croce, along with five others, was killed in a plane crash. He was 30 years old. He was actually supposed to be performing at Post a few weeks after that.

I had a hard time selecting just three songs for this post. They all evoke such strong memories for me. It was my first year away from home and many of his songs definitely have a place in my “coming of age” playlist.

I actually owned a couple of Jim Croce albums, but added this album, Photographs & Memories, to my collection when it was released in 1974. I actually played selections from it pretty regularly over the next 30 years and it was one of the first albums I uploaded to my first iPod.

Hope you enjoy the three songs we picked to share…
