The Thursday Murder Club

I am doing this post in August 2023, several months after I actually finished the book. My journaling habits have been pretty slack. I am pushing to get and stay current.

The Thursday Murder Club is a mystery novel by Richard Osman. It was released in September 2020. It follows a group of four British retirees who meet every Thursday to solve cold cases. The club is made up of Elizabeth, a former MI5 agent; Joyce, a former nurse; Ron, a former labor leader; and Ibrahim, a former psychiatrist. The novel is set in Cooper’s Chase, a luxury retirement village in Kent. When a local developer is found murdered and in possession of a mysterious photograph, they find themselves up close and personal with a very real, very current homicide investigation.

The book was very successful when it launched. It is an enjoyable, well-paced read. The characters are likable and keep you engaged. Osman’s dry wit is clearly evident. Many of the plot twists are predictable and the ending was anticlimactic. Despite these failings, I enjoyed it enough to put the next book in the series on my reading list.
