Our latest British crime show find is Shetland. It is based on the Shetland Island Mysteries series by Ann Cleeves. Cleeves also authored The Vera Stanhope Mystery series which inspired Vera, another British crime show we are continuing to watch. The series takes place in Shetland, an island archipelago off the Northern coast of Scotland. It stars Douglas Henshall as Jimmy Pérez, a detective inspector working for the Scottish police, Alison O’Donnell as Detective Sergeant Alison “Tosh” Macintosh, and Steven Robertson as Detective Constable Sandy Wilson.
The plotlines are solid and have some depth. They are “dark.” The characters are developed well and engage you. The setting is really stunning (but, as Teresa points out, it is way too cold). Each story is told across two episodes. There are six seasons (series as the BRits call them) with a seventh on the way.
All in all, another British crime series we recommend adding to your watch list.
