This Friday’s song is “Fields of Gold” by Sting. This classic ballad was released on the Ten Summoner’s Tales album in June 1993. Even though most of the music I listened to at this time was country, I had always been a fan of The Police and Sting as he built his solo career. His vocals on this song pulled you in and you really could imagine that you were walking through golden fields of barley in England.
I was living in Addison, Texas just north of Dallas in 1993. The year before, I had left Texas Instruments with some friends to help launch a new company, MetaSolv Software. During 1993, we established a couple of key customer relationships that led to the product that drove the company’s growth and success. It is still being marketed and used by telecommunications companies thirty years later which is pretty incredible. As anyone who has been through a pure startup experience will tell you, it is always filled with challenges and uncertainty. Despite or maybe because of that, this was one of the really memorable experiences of my life and this song brings a lot of it back.
I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I’ve broken
But I swear in the days still left
We’ll walk in fields of gold
We’ll walk in fields of gold
