Clancy’s Tavern — This Friday’s Song

This Friday’s song is one of my favorites in our music collection. “Clancy’s Tavern” by Toby Keith is the title track of his fifteenth studio album which was released in 2011. The song is a tribute to Toby Keith’s grandmother who owned and ran a nightclub in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Here is The story behind the song title.

“The name of the bar was Billy Garners’ Supper Club, but it wasn’t fitting into my song very well. My Grandfather had nicknamed her Clancy because she was a saloon keeper, and always called her Clancy around the house. So I used Clancy’s Tavern. I give you the visual and everything you see when you go in the door. There’s nothing made up in this song. Every bit of this is word for word, exactly what you would have seen if you went in the front door at 5:00 and stayed all night long. It’s a pretty special song to me.”

My wife Teresa will tell you that I played “Clancy’s Tavern” almost “to death” when it was first released. She indulged me, but I know I drove her crazy. I guess the story and the melody both spoke to me. It is still at the top of my “favorites” playlist, so it kicks off shower time every morning. Hope you enjoy “Clancy’s tavern” by Toby Keith.
